I will start by clearing that the airport is often called the San Jose international airport but in fact San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and the airport is located in the city of Alajuela which is about 22 km away from downtown San Jose. Some of the most important things you should know about our airport is that is a small easy to get around airport it will take you an average of 20 to 30 minutes to pass all the different airport checks like immigration and bag pick up. Once out of the airport if you are renting a car your car rental company will pick you up once you walk out of the building none of the rental companies have offices in the airport they will be waiting as you walk out with a sing and your name on it from here they will take you to their offices which in most cases are located very close to the airport. if you are boarding a taxi be aware that negotiation is a possibility but setting a price before you board a must. The normal rate to the city goes from $25 to $35 depending on the part of the city you are heading to.
One very important thing is NOT to exchange money at the airport they give you a horrible exchange rate you are much better off using an ATM and US currency is widely accepted and use specially with cabs hotels and restaurants. Duty free shops at the airport are not so great most of the things they sell can be acquired at a same or better price once out of the airport.
La Boruca is located according to Google maps 24 km away from the airport its a 30 to 35 minute ride we normally don’t take the main road so we can avoid the downtown area. We can easily arrange airport pick up and airport drop off from La Boruca at any time early in the morning or late at night. Despise the distance many people tell us they rather spend that extra 30 minutes and stay at a place they can enjoy and not at a busy city its like grasping just a bit more out Costa Rica once you get here or when you leave instead of concrete and noise at La Boruca we have nature, mountains and birds so trading the distance and time is a good deal.
Please lets us know if you have question about Costa Rica and we will try our best to help.
