The Irazu volcano is the highest volcano in the country the drive from La Boruca to Irazu is a very special one with lots of amazing views and great scenery. To go to the Irazu volcano you don’t have to cross the city you can take the mountain road that is perfectly paved and it has hardly any traffic and be at the volcano’s crater in one hour and fifteen minutes max.
The Irazu volcano is an active volcano located in the province of Cartago at an altitude of 3432 meters above sea level the volcano has 3 main craters and one of the nice things of visiting this location is that you can actually walk on the crater,
it’s like walking on mars or the moon the vegetation on the side of the crater it’s also quite interesting to observe mostly high altitude vegetation. Being at the top of the volcano is like taking a walk on the clouds on a clear day you will be able to see the ocean.
One of the nicest things on this trip is the drive to the volcano and the surrounding attractions that can be visit after your visit to the clouds on your way down you can visit a haunted place the Duran Sanatorium this place was closed over 30 years ago and it used to be a hospital for the mentally insane and also at one point in history a place for those sick with tuberculosis many famous TV shows have made specials from these location there is many tales about ghosts and paranormal activity in this place now it’s a local run museum that you can visit. From here you can visit the Orosi valley a place of great beuty you can also visit the Lancaster gardens in Paraiso.
